Earlier this offseason Fernando Tatis Jr signed on of the richest deals in MLB history with a 14 year $340 million dollar deal the only one richer than his was Mike Trout's contract. Tatis is only 22 years old and is primed to take over the league, but why pay him before arbitration? It could be the Padres trying to get on his good side or it could be something cynical, only time can tell. The way you measure contracts in the MLB is different than those of the NFL and NBA because this league isn't salary capped like the others. So you don't measure it based off of world series titles or winning seasons you base it off of personal success such as batting titles or MVP's. However the Padres have close to a billion dollars locked up in three players and want a ring so desperately they have talked about adding another high profile signing. Tatis Jr's deal is worth more than his father's entire 11 year salary but by the time the Padres would pay off this deal the Mets will still be paying Bobby Bonilla for to more seasons. and he has played since the 90's.
