The NCAA basketball season is coming to its peak here soon with the March tournament set so start in just two weeks. The tournament is always good fun and shows just how competitive college basketball is. However, I think the NCAA needs to take a good long look and see how to reshape how teams get into the tournament. I’m all for conference champs getting an automatic bid and I think the Cinderella stories are the best part of March but letting teams like Duke and UNC into the dance just because of their prestige and reputation is a little backwards. Every year teams with great records miss the tournament just because they play in smaller conferences. For example, the Liberty Women’s team is straight up balling this season, but unless they win their tightly contested conference, they won’t even sniff the dance. The overall point is with the NIL availability and a possible reshaping of the conferences in the coming years it marks the perfect time to change the way things work for the better. I don’t know much about college basketball because I don’t watch until the conference playoffs but I know good teams when I see them and when they get left out of the tournament, it’s a real shame.
