Crippling Contracts

In the NFL there is a salary cap, meaning all teams have to pay the same for 53 players however you spread it around. This year was one of he first years that the cap went down, and it went down to 185.2 million. Which teams are now releasing players that are considered "cap casualties" or players that just don't produce on the field relative to their salary. Some players who signed 4 year deals last offseason are getting cut and the last three years of the contract getting voided such as Kyle Van Noy who was released by the Dolphins last week to open up 12 million in salary cap for the team.

Some teams have major cap hits i.e. the Seahawks with Russell Wilson(35 million) and the Packers with Aaron Rodgers(32 million). having players at such a high percentage of the cap is burdening to team. In the case of the Packers, Rodgers' cap hit is hindering their chances on resigning Pro Bowl runningback Aaron Jones. In the case of the Chiefs, Mahomes makes 25%+ of their cap and today that led to the Chiefs releasing both offensive tackles and giving themselves no room to work because they are over the cap to start the new league year.
