The Vikings are long overdue for a coaching change, but it seemed they wanted the Zimmer experience to work too much. The offense that has an overwhelming amount of talent has underwhelmed at every step since signing Kirk Cousins. However, blaming Cousins is the wrong way to look at it because behind him is the play calling of Mike Zimmer. The team is in major need of an offensive head coach and here are my top 5 candidates for the job.
5. Jim Caldwell, a coach who should have not been fired from his previous two jobs and hasn’t had one since but deserves one mightily. Caldwell helped lead Stafford to his best statistical seasons and led the Lions to 2 playoff berths.
4. Lane Kiffin, the Ole Miss coach has always expressed his desire to have the best possible job he can and has NFL head coaching experience as he coached the Raiders for two seasons. (07-08) The Vikings have a special roster that could use a unique coach to run it.
3. Doug Pederson, he led the Carson Wentz led Eagles to playoffs only to have Nick Foles lead the way for the playoffs with little to no drop off in production. Pederson will provide an offensive presence that they have lacked wince hiring Zimmer.
2. Bill O’Brian, if the Vikings want to be a perennial playoff team, they should hire O’Brian. The only downfall of hiring him is that once they get to the playoffs they collapse under the pressure. O’Brian is a proven commodity in the NFL and would have no problem transitioning to Minnesota
1. Brian Daboll, maybe the only candidate that could help Cousins become a true MVP guy, especially after what he did for Josh Allen in Buffalo. There are many similarities between the two teams including having a great defense that would pair well with his offense.
