The 49ers have made it very clear that they will be drafting a quarterback after they moved up from pick 12 to pick 3 in this years draft. Who they will take however has not been clear at all. I stated last week that I believe Justin Fields is the second best quarterback coming out this year, only behind Trevor Lawrence. We can presume Trevor goes first to the Jaguars and Zach Wilson will go second to the Jets and a week ago Mac Jones to the 49ers at 3. Then Kyle Shanahan kept talking and rumors from inside the front office started flying around that there was a split in the front office. To me the whole thing feels like a diversion but what or who could they be diverting? That kind of thing happens when a team wants to trade back and get a major haul for the pick. For example the 49ers tricked the Bears into trading up one spot with them to draft Trubisky 2nd overall when there was no real threat to move up and get him. Personally I think the 49ers go Mac Jones, he might not have the highest ceiling but he definitely has the highest floor, or I layman's terms, the safest pick. Trey Lance is the other guy they like but he has bust written all over him coming from the same school as Carson Wentz and not playing any meaningful games in his collegiate career. If I was the 49ers I wouldn't have traded up in the first place but now that they're there you have to take the right guy or you will be the laughing stock of the draft.
