Luka The Next Big Thing?

Luka Garza coming out was not very high on anybody’s draft boards despite being the Naismith player of the year and winning the Wooden Award. This past season at Iowa he became the school’s all time leading scorer and led them to a number 2 seed in the March tournament. After all that Garza fell to the 52nd pick in this years NBA draft where the Pistons were more than happy to draft the big man. This summer he dropped thirty pounds and really started to take care of his body, something that is important when you stand at 6 foot 11 inches. During summer league he looked nimble and quite fast, but his stats really shined brighter than his physical stature. He averaged 20 points per game and 14.5 rebounds arguably outshining the number one pick Cade Cunningham, all be it summer league. Today the Pistons announced they will sign Garza to a two-way contract, meaning he will play for their G-league affiliate as well as their “major league” team. Garza is a traditional big man playing primarily in the post but with his new, lighter frame he can stretch the floor more. Pairing him with a stellar head coach, Dwane Casey, and some players who compliment each other already on the roster such as, Jerami Grant, Seddiq Bey, and the number one pick Cade Cunningham seems like a good plan for the future of the Detroit Pistons. As for the 2021-2022 Pistons, I do not see them competing for anything other than the number one pick again. Other than the players I have mentioned already the Pistons do not boast a talented roster and unless Cunningham and Garza go on a roll and have some insane averages they will be the bottom of the barrel once more.
