Today March 15th is the "first" day of free agency in the NFL yet no contracts, other than extensions, can be signed until 4pm EST in Tuesday March 16th. A couple teams have already agreed on terms with some big name free agents but they have the ability to not opt out of the agreement.
The Patriots have been the most aggressive during this period agreeing with tight end Jonnu Smith 4 years 50 million, nose tackle Davon Godchaux 2 years 16 million, defensive back Jalen Mills 4 years 24 million, defensive end Matt Judon 4 years 32 million, and wide out Nelson Agholor 2 years 26 million. That makes the most they have spent in the past ten years in guaranteed money. The Raiders signed defensive end Yannick Ngakoue to a 2 year 26 million dollar deal, while the Broncos also try and make a splash on defense and sign cornerback Ronald Darby to a 3 year deal. Down south the Jaguars started spending their record cap availability with nose tackle Roy Robertson-Harris to 3 years 24.4 million, Former Patriots wide receiver Philip Dorsett and former Seahawks runningback Carlos Hyde. But the biggest signing of the day is Offensive Guard Joe Thuney who signed a 5 year 80 million dollar deal with the reigning AFC champs the Kansas City Chiefs to bolster that O-line who will potentially lose three starters this free agency.
Altogether the big names are going to wait until tomorrow when free agency officially opens but the deals that were done today were all good in value besides the Darby deal which all the details were not released. This also shows the Patriots are frustrated with how last season ended and want to rehash that championship DNA that still runs through that team and I can't wait to see Cam throwing touchdown passes to his new targets.
