Justin Herbert showed out last year throwing for 4,336 yards and tossing 31 touchdowns while only throwing 10 interceptions. He was also supposed to sit for the season behind Tyrod Taylor but the team doctors had different plans in mind when they punctured his lung in week 2. The injury led to Herbert starting the week 2 game against the Chiefs in Los Angeles. A game where Herbert played very well, throwing for 311 yards one touchdown and one interception. He didn't outplay Mahomes but did have a better completion percentage and had more yards. (302) The game went to overtime with the Chiefs winning 23-20. The importance of this game loomed large as Herbert would be named the starter for the rest of the season and put in question the coaching ability of Anthony Lynn. Herbert went on to win rookie of the year after going 6-9 as the starter and missing the playoffs, but that couldn't save Lynn's job. This offseason the Chargers hired Brandon Staley as head coach and Joe Lombardi as the offensive coordinator. This already marks the second coaches for Herbert while Mahomes has never gone through a coaching change in his short but successful career. Unlike Herbert, Mahomes was able to sit his entire rookie year while Alex Smith led the Chiefs to a 14-2 record. Herberts success might lean on how reliable the Chargers are with their hiring process and if Staley was the right hire. This year is crucial, one because of the coaching change, two because the offensive line was revamped to protect Herbert and three that defense isn't getting any younger. I expect the AFC West to be as completive as ever and most likely will have three playoff teams in the division with the Broncos being the odd team out, but all could change if the Broncos acquire Aaron Rodgers. I mean the Raiders have just as much chance to get Rodgers as the Broncos do.
