Today was the deadline in the NFL to cut your roster down to 53 players. The day is made sad because for some it will be the last time they ever step onto a football field in a professional way, but for some it will spark a new flame or put a chip on their shoulder. Today one cut hit me personally and that was the release of Cam Newton by the New England Patriots. I tell people all the time that the league is a business and cuts like these happen every single year, but it’s hard to believe a former MVP wouldn’t serve well to keep as a backup at least. Today former Patriots player Chris Long tweeted that he believes this is a favor from Bill to Cam.
Cam Newton is a starting caliber quarterback in this league but needs to find the right team to give him a chance. A team like the Giants would be a decent fit because Daniel Jones doesn’t seem to be “the guy” and the opportunity could arise for Cam to play and start. Another team would be the Bengals but for a different reason. Joe Burrow’s health will be a hot topic this season and having a solid backup to bring in if Burrow goes down again.
Other notable cuts:
Nick Folk, K, Patriots
Keke Coutee, WR, Texans
Trace MCsorley, QB, Ravens (injury designation)
Kerryon Johnson, RB, Eagles
Lamar Miller, RB, Washington
Peyton Barber, RB, Washington
Breshad Perriman, WR, Detroit
Devin Funchess, WR, Packers
Joey Slye, K, Panthers
Chris Banjo, S, Cardinals
