Ryan Tannehill has been in the news recently for his comments on what his role will be to newly drafted rookie Malik Willis. He was asked whether or not he sees himself as a mentor to the rookie and in his own words said no and cited that they will be 'competitors' when defending his answer. He is absolutely correct thinking this way and some would even go as far as him being a more fierce competitor for his answer, but it reminds me of another incident that happened not to long ago. In 2018 the Ravens selected Lamar Jackson 32nd overall and Joe Flacco was asked the same thing about mentorship to the young QB and his response was eerily similar, and when he was moved to Denver he said, about Drew Lock, "I'm here to win games not be a mentor". both situations played out the same way Flacco started a few games, was underwhelming and got replaced by the rookie who instantly revitalized their teams. The track record for QBs who say that the next man up isn't necessarily their responsibility is bad and if the trend follows I can see Malik Willis starting by week 10 this season, if not sooner.
