Does Size Matter?

This week at the NFL combine Kenny Pickett’s hands measured in at 8.5 inches. That’s the 4th smallest hands in combine history. It would also be the smallest hands by a drafted QB since 2001, that guy was Michael Vick. Vick turned out pretty good on the field, but we never got to see his full potential. Pickett on the other hand isn’t as athletic as Vick in any way. Sure, he got away with that sweet fake slide but how will he stack up against NFL speeds? Recently guys with small hands haven’t had much success in the NFL with the likes of Sam Darnold and Josh Rosen having famously small hands. (Still larger than Pickett’s) even Kyler Murray whose hands are on the smaller side of the “sweet spot” for the size of a QB’s hands has had a problem fumbling the ball. Like Murray, Pickett also likes to run the ball himself which could put himself in tough situations. I’m not saying he will be a bust in any sense, but the measurement worries me. He’ll still be the first QB off the board any franchise that picks him will be happy with the pick and in the right situation he will be able to succeed in the NFL.
