My first ever story was about who I think should start at QB for the New Orleans Saints this season and I made it very clear that Jameis Winston is the clear and obvious choice. The Saints not naming him the starter and them giving Taysom Hill a real shot at the spot makes me ask the question whether the Saints could tank the season to get one of the young guys in next years draft such as Spencer Rattler or Sam Howell. Michael Thomas having surgery this close to the season also contributes to the conspiracy. Reports show that Thomas knew he needed surgery to repair damage in his ankle earlier this offseason and the recovery time is around 6-8 weeks, but he decided now was a good time to have this surgery which will cause him to miss the start of the season. The Saints also put themselves into a hole with their cap situation by signing players who needed to be signed if they wanted to keep them long-term. The argument against a tank season is their new efforts to trade for the INT king from last season, Xavien Howard. The whole thing could be a ploy to trick the opposition into preparing for Taysom's run heavy offense and then trotting out Jameis and his air-raid style of play. The Saints could have also been in talks with Thomas about his surgery to make sure everything was triple checked on his ankle before having this invasive surgery that could have possibly been avoided. The whole team construct does not make sense at the moment but with the Preseason starting on the 5th we will learn more.
