Today the Carolina Panthers did something that hasn't been done since 2016, and that is trade for the number one overall pick. The deal was between the Chicago Bears and my beloved Carolina Panthers. The Panthers received the first pick and the Bears received the 9th overall pick, 61st overall pick, next years 1st round pick and a 2025 2nd round pick. Oh and pro-bowl wide out and fan favorite DJ Moore, giving Justin fields a true number one wide receiver.
Betting Changes: Since the season ended Bryce Young was the odds on favorite to be the first player selected in April's draft, with most books having it as low as -200 odds. However the Panthers as a franchise have leaned towards the taller quarterbacks; like Cam Newton, Jake Delhomme, and Frank Reich. So the odds have moved seeing CJ Stroud catapult up to the top with -350 odds and Bryce young falling to plus money, to go first. Two names that didn't have any movement based off the trade were Anthony Richardson and Will Levis, both looking like projects and longshots to go first overall.
Immediate Rumors: Almost as soon as the news broke about the trade, murmurs about the Panthers moving back "a couple" spots started to swirl. Personally I don't see a team desperate enough to jump the Texans at second to snag a QB in front of them. As much as I would love to see Las Vegas or Indy jump up and give up a haul to Carolina for the first pick it just seems unlikely.
Who Should They Take: Assuming they keep the pick, they will take a QB, there is no doubt about that. Bryce Young is just too small in stature for my liking and has mediocre athletic abilities. CJ Stroud is an Ohio State product and that always makes me nervous based off their track record in producing QB's, but would be a solid guy to go after. Will Levis is the most unpredictable guy in this years draft because he had a decent college career but never showed anything special, and his measurables are lack-luster. My pick is Anthony Richardson. He's a 6'4 231 pound monster at the position and he runs a 4.4 second 40-yard dash. He even called himself Cam Jackson.
